Nous visitons tout d’abord les projets
près de Rumdoul, un petit village du sud du Cambodge. Les projets y sont développés
par l’ONG depuis peu de temps et s’inspire du modèle vietnamien, déjà rodé
depuis une vingtaine d’années.
After nearly 5 months on Asian roads, we
were really looking forward to finally meet the Mekong Plus team, the NGO we
decided to support during our travels.
Our first visit took us to Rumdoul, a small
village in southern Cambodia where we received a very warm welcome by the young
and enthusiastic team. Rumdoul is actually the “little sister” of the older and
more experienced Vietnamese model which has already been in place for about
twenty years.
Après deux jours de visite, nous regagnons
le delta du Mékong, dans le sud du Vietnam pour y rejoindre les quatre autres pédaleuses
prenant part au projet : Maïté, Elise, Yara et Marie-Liesse. Nous parcourons
alors ensemble les projets autour de la ville de Long My.
After two days of visiting the various
projects, our journey took us to the Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam, where we
joined four other young cyclists to visit the local Mekong Plus projects:
Maïté, Elise, Yara and Marie-Liesse.
Together we visited the projects located in the surrounding area of Long My.
Dans les deux pays, les visites
se font à vélo, bien encadrées par de jeunes équipes très enthousiastes,
travaillant sur place. Le vélo a l’avantage de nous emmener presque partout et
de nous faire découvrir de splendides paysages. Nous traversons des km de rizières, de forets de bambou et de petits chemins
de terre en essayant d’éviter tant bien que mal les tapis de riz étalés sur le
sol ou les poulets qui décampent à notre passage… Pour visiter certaines familles
vivant dans les zones les plus reculées, nous nous lançons à plusieurs à bord de
petites barques.
In both countries the visits of the
projects were realized on our bikes, organized by the local teams. The
advantage of traveling by bicycle was to be able to go anywhere we liked, also
enabling us to discover the splendid surrounding landscapes. We passed km of
rice fields, bamboo forests and small mud paths, continuously trying to avoid
the rice spread on the floor and the chicken crossing our paths…In order to
visit some families living in the more remote areas, we continued our journey
on small boats.
Hormis l’accueil très chaleureux
des familles lors des visites, nous avons été particulièrement impressionnés
par le travail réalisé par l’ONG. Elle réussit, par une multitude de petites
actions intégrées et à bas coûts, à améliorer le quotidien de milliers de
personnes. Les équipes de Mékong Plus travaillent avec les familles les plus
pauvres (6 € par mois et par personne) et en faisant participer l’ensemble des
villageois.
Les actions sont très diverses et
incluent le microcrédit, la santé, l’éducation, l’agriculture, l’emploi,
l’environnement,… Elles touchent près de
500 villages, dont 40 au Cambodge.
Besides the very warm
welcoming of the families during our numerous visits, we were particularly
impressed with the work carried out by Mekong Plus. Through the integration of
a multitude of small actions at low cost, they manage to improve the daily life
of thousands of people. The Mekong Plus teams closely work together with the
poorest families (earning a maximum of 6 € per person per month), integrating entire
communities in their program.
The actions are very diverse
and include micro-credit, hygiene, education, agricultural techniques, development
of the employment, sustainable actions... The programs cover about 500
villages, 40 of which are located in Cambodia.
Notre projet
Grâce à votre générosité,
nous avons réussi à récolter 5000 euros pour les programmes de la région de
Long My. Nous avons décidé de consacrer cet argent aux projets d’éducation, espérant
ainsi offrir un meilleur futur aux enfants les plus pauvres !
Ces fonds permettront d’offrir de nouvelles bourses
scolaires, la construction
d'une « Happy Room » dans une école (local interactif pour les enfants
handicapés) et l'achat de 15 ordinateurs d'occasion supplémentaires pour les
cours d'informatique. Nous tenions, en retour, à vous faire découvrir ces projets en images.

Our project
Thanks to your generosity, we have managed to
collect 5000 Euros for the programs in the region of Long My. We have decided
to devote this money to the educational projects, hoping to help creating a
better future to the poorest children.
These funds will enable to create new school
scholarships, the construction of a “Happy Room” (interactive room for
handicapped children) in one school and the purchase of 15 additional second
hand computers for the informatics courses. We invite you to discover to these

Brossage de dents
Nous assistons dans plusieurs écoles
à des séances collectives de brossage de dents, auxquelles nous prenons part
sous l’œil amusés des élèves les plus distraits. Car pas question de
rigoler ! Alignés en rang d’oignons de façon quasi militaire, les élèves
répètent les gestes de façon précise, au rythme des coups de gong du directeur.
La scène peut faire sourire mais en matière de santé, le manque d’hygiène tout
comme le manque d’information est flagrant, encore plus au Cambodge qu’au
Vietnam.
Tooth brushing
To the amusement of some distracted pupils,
we participated at the collective weekly sessions of tooth brushing at several
schools. Though this is not a laughing matter! The pupils stand in (almost
military) lines, repeating in a very precise way, to the rhythm of the director
drumming the gong, the gestures of the teachers. Watching this scene can make one
laugh, but it a matter of fact the lack of hygiene and necessary information is
blatant, even more so in Cambodia than in Vietnam.
L’enseignement de la santé étant trop
souvent négligé, Mékong Plus forme les enseignants et fournit des livres pour
les cours théoriques. La santé des enfants s’améliore, ils nettoient leur école
et deviennent ainsi plus conscients de la propreté.
As health education is often neglected,
Mekong Plus trains the teachers and provides the necessary tools (books and
false teeth) for the theoretical classes for the pupils. This program has
already been in place for a number of years and has already been integrated in
43 schools in the Mekong Delta region alone. Annually evaluations prove the
progress of the pupil’s hygiene, the children become more and more aware of
their cleanliness.
Dans le village de Long Phu, au
Vietnam, les élèves nous accueillent tout d’abord avec une chorégraphie très
colorée. Et après quelques bons moments partagés lors de la récréation, les rires
laissent place au silence et à la concentration pour le brossage intensif des
dents… qui ne semble pas être apprécié par tous…
In the village of Long Phu in Vietnam, the
children welcomed us with a vibrant choreography. After spending some memorable
moments together during their break, the laughs were replaced by silent
concentration for the intensive tooth brushing… as you can see something not
appreciated by everyone…
Happy room
Un projet particulièrement
touchant est la création de « Happy Room » (« classe du bonheur »)
visant à intégrer les enfants handicapés à l’école. Dans cette salle de jeux,
les enfants atteints de handicap jouent trois fois par semaine pendant une
petite heure avec d’autres enfants. Le reste du temps, ils participent
normalement aux autres leçons.
Happy room
A particularly moving project is the
installation of the so called “Happy Rooms”, aiming to integrate disabled
children into schools. In this playroom the disabled children play three times
a week during 45 mins with other children. The rest of the time they
participate at the normal lessons.
Mékong Plus forme les
enseignants, aide pour le matériel et encourage les parents. Déjà 144 enfants
en difficulté ont rejoint une école et font des progrès émouvants. Le cout
d’une « Happy room » est de 500 dollars et 7 écoles disposent
actuellement de ce local.
Nous sommes heureux de pouvoir
contribuer à la création d’une nouvelle de ces salles…
Mekong Plus trains the teachers, provides
the material required for teaching and encourages the parents of disabled
children to participate. Already 144 children have benefited from this program,
helping them to make continues progress. The cost of a “Happy Room” is 500
dollars and Mekong Plus has helped to install 7 rooms so far. We are happy to
be able to help creating one more of these rooms…
Local informatique
Au Cambodge et au Vietnam, l’éducation
est payante et reste chère. Dans les régions rurales les plus pauvres, les
enfants doivent souvent arrêter l’école, surtout après le primaire. La
pédagogie insiste surtout sur le «par cœur» et sur la discipline, mais peu sur
l’éveil et l’initiative. L'informatique
est au programme scolaire au Vietnam mais la quasi totalité des écoles rurales
n'ont pas d'ordinateurs.
La mise en place de salle
informatique dans ces écoles a pour but de valoriser l’éducation et de pousser
les parents à scolariser leur enfant. La pratique de l’informatique leur offre
aussi de nouveaux débouchés. Mékong Plus aide pour l’achat de matériel et pour
la formation des professeurs.
Computer room
In Cambodia and Vietnam, education entails school
fees and remains expensive. In remote rural areas, many poor children have to
give up school in order to help their parents supporting the family. The
educational methods insist above all on learning “out by heart” and discipline
rather than inquisitiveness or self-initiative. Although informatics forms part
of the syllabus in Vietnamese schools, the majority of schools do not have
access to computers restricting the teaching to theoretical classes.
The installation of computer rooms in these
schools aims to enhance the importance of education and encourages parents to
send their children to school. Practical computer knowledge also offers the
children new career prospects. Apart from supplying the material, Mekong Plus
also provides the training for the teachers.
Microcrédit
Nous rendons visite à de
nombreuses familles vivant dans l’extrême pauvreté, leurs revenus ne dépassant
pas 6 à 7 € par personne et par mois. Mais, l’accueil est à chaque fois
extraordinaire, nous sommes reçus avec de larges sourires et parfois même de
quoi manger et nous rafraîchir.
Mékong Plus aide plus de 5.000
ménages en leur proposant un microcrédit.
Ce prêt, sans intérêt pendant les trois premières années, leur sert à investir
dans l’agriculture et l’élevage, principales sources de revenus dans les zones
rurales les plus pauvres. La plupart des familles visitées ont au minimum
doublé leurs revenus après 3 ans.
Micro Credit
We visited numerous families living in
extreme poverty, their income not exceeding 6 to 7 € per person per month.
Their welcome was every time extraordinary, we were greeted with big smiles and
sometimes even cold drinks and small snacks.
Mekong Plus helps over 5000 households with
the micro credits scheme. This interest free loan over the duration of the
first three years, helps them to invest in agriculture and the elevation of
live stock, the principle income sources in the most remote and poor areas. The
majority of the families we visited during our stay have at least doubled their
income after the 3 years.
Another prove of efficiency of the NGO was the parallel training of para-veterinarians and village workers in various communities, enabling the habitants to vaccinate their stock and benefit from their knowledge.
Dans le delta du Mékong, Monsieur
Truong est très fier de nous montrer son grand potager et nous fait même gouter
ses délicieux concombres. Grace aux prêts de Mékong Plus, il cultive non
seulement des fruits et des légumes mais élève aussi des poissons dans son
bassin. Et pour protéger ses cultures des insectes, monsieur Truong a laissé tomber
les produits chimiques pour l’utilisation de grands filets. Il vend ses
produits au marché tous les matins pour près de 10 dollars de bénéfices.
In the Mekong Delta, Mr. Truong is very
proud to show us his large vegetable garden and even let us taste his delicious
cucumbers. Thanks to the loan from Mekong Plus he is not only cultivating
fruits and vegetables but also elevates fish in his pond. Mr Truong has stopped
using chemical products in order to protect his farming from insects, using
large nets instead. Each morning he sells his goods on the local market, making
about 10 dollars of profit.
Au Cambodge, monsieur Huong ne
manque pas de boulot ! En pleine saison sèche, il s’active dans les
rizières alors que ses voisins attendent patiemment la mousson pour l’unique
récolte de l’année. Depuis qu’il a pu s’acheter un réseau de pompes, monsieur Huong
récolte son riz quatre fois par an et a ainsi pu améliorer ses revenus dès la
première année.
In Cambodia, Mr Huon is not short of work !
Even in the dry season, he is working in his rice fields whereas his neighbours
are patiently waiting for the monsoon for their single crop of the year. Since
he has been able to purchase an underground water pump, Mr Huang plants his
rice four times a year and therefore has been able to improve his income from
the first year onwards.
Biogaz
Un des projets environnementaux performant
est le système « biogaz » qui transforme les problèmes de l’élevage
des cochons en une solution aux multiples avantages. Les excréments des porcs s’accumulent
dans un grand boudin en plastique qui se gonfle progressivement de gaz méthane,
utilisable pour la cuisine.
Biogas
One of the integrated environmental
projects is the installation of biogas, converting the difficulties of pig
elevation into various advantages. The excrements of the pigs are collected in
a large plastic hose that progressively inflates itself with methane gas, which
then can be utilized for cooking.
Lorsqu’il a acheté son cinquième
cochon, Monsieur Le Van Tau n’a pas hésité un instant à mettre en place un
système biogaz. Depuis lors, il n’a plus de moustiques, presque plus d’odeurs
et il économise près de 50 dollars de gaz par an.
When he purchased his fifth pig, Mr Le Van
Tu did not hesitate for a moment to install a biogas system. Since then, the
mosquitoes and odors have nearly disappeared and he even economizes about 50
dollars in gas every year.
Nous nous rendons enfin dans différents
ateliers où des groupes de femmes travaillent ensemble pour confectionner des couvre-lits,
des tapis, des sacs ou encore des objets en papier mâché. Mekong Plus propose
une formation à ces femmes sans-emploi ou au boulot instable. Leurs revenus vont
jusqu'à doubler, elles ont accès au microcrédit pour investir en plus dans
l’agriculture et elles ont l’occasion de travailler en surveillant les enfants.
Employment opportunity
At last, we also visited various workshops
where groups of women worked together in order to craft bed covers, carpets,
bags and even objects made of paper mache. Mekong Plus offers training to these
women who previously were unemployed or had instable employments. Their incomes
increase significantly, they receive health care and have access to micro
credits for agricultural purposes. Another main advantage is the opportunity to
look after their children while working.
Les produits sont ensuite vendus dans quatre magasins, à Saigon, Hà-Nôi, Phnom Penh et Seam Reap. Chaque magasin vend assez pour faire un bénéfice qui finance des actions de développement profitant à tout le village de ces femmes.
The finished products are then sold in the
four Mekong Plus shops in Saigon, Hanoi, Phnom Penh and Seam Reap. The profits
of these shops are used to finance these development projects, supporting the
villages of these women.
Pour terminer, nous tenions à
remercier toutes les équipes de Mékong Plus pour nous avoir fait découvrir leur
travail avec autant de passion.
Merci aux familles pour leur
accueil et leur gentillesse. C’est touchant de voir la générosité de ces gens
qui ont bien souvent si peu.
Les échanges culturels et les amitiés nouées au fil des km nous donnent le
sentiment d'avoir abordé une autre dimension du Vietnam et du Cambodge : des
pays peuplés d'une population à la volonté farouche, dynamique et prête à
s'investir pour améliorer leur quotidien, pour autant qu'on leur en donne les
moyens.
Et enfin, merci beaucoup aux personnes
ayant soutenus ce projet financièrement. En espérant avoir pu démontrer, par le
travail dynamique de cette ONG, que l’on peut arriver à de très belles choses
avec de modestes moyens…
We would finally like to thank the entire

We are also grateful to the families for
their warm welcome and their kindness. It was very moving to see the generosity
of these people who often possess so little. The cultural exchanges and the
friendship formed over the pedaled distance have given us the sensation of getting
a much better comprehension of the Vietnamese and Cambodian cultures: these are
countries with a hardworking and dynamic population, ready to improve their
daily lives if given an opportunity.
We would also like to express a particular thank
you to all the people that have supported this project financially. We hope
that we have been able to show you that, thanks to the work of this dynamic
NGO, it is possible to create beautiful things with very modest means…
