floral.
Perched at 1475m, Dalat has long been a
summer escape from the heat for the French colonialists. Grand French villas
are dotted amid pines groves and the surrounding farms are famous for their
strawberries and flowers. With a mini replication of the Eiffel tower, a “Love
valley” and other attractions, it is a domestic honeymoon destination and the
capital of kitsch! Adapting to the local tourism, we decided to spend a
“romantic day” visiting the flower gardens, taking beautiful pictures of us
smelling flowers and holding hands on a swing!
The local bohemian flair is also expressed
in the city’s architecture; the “Hang Nga Crazy House” being a fine example. From
afar the building, the cause of many public debates, seems surreal and impressive but after a
closer examination it appears to be little more than poor imitation of Antoni
Gaudi. The organic structures resembling trees and animals are in reality not
very appealing and even hazardous.... not that I am a building regulations geek! Nevertheless we had fun getting lost in this labyrinth!
Leaving Dalat we enjoyed the downhill ride
with stunning views over a beautiful landscape. Gorgeous mountains, lush
vegetation, waterfalls and the visit of a silk factory made a perfect day of
cycling. The next days off up through coffee plantations and pine trees to Buan Ma Thuot were also very pleasant.Unfortunately our good fortune ended when
we turned onto the Ho Chi Minh Trail which turned out to be the road of hell!
Trucks and buses filled the roads, beeping their horns and overtaking each other
constantly without paying any attention to two-wheeled vehicles. We got to know the downside of touring and I think there is no need to say that there was a lot of swearing
involved over the following three days...
Arrivés entier à Kontum, on rend
Once
we arrived in Kontum, things improved enormously: the crazy traffic
disappeared, leaving us to enjoy the pleasant scenery peacefully. The area is
also home to many tribal villages living in stilt houses. Their community houses used for public activities are easily recognizable with their large pitched roofs.
The next few days made up for the previous experiences and the beautiful landscapes and the deserted roads nearly made us forget about how we got there. Even the regular rainfall didn't diminish our optimistic mood, in fact the clouds created a great atmosphere for some photographs!
