premier arrêt à Long Hai.
Lying on a sandy beach, swimming in blue
water and relaxing… that was something I had been dreaming of uncountable times
when we were riding the hot and dusty roads in Cambodia.
So I was excited when we finally left the
chaotic traffic of Saigon behind us and put our bikes on a hydrofoil. After
less than two hours we arrived at Vung Tau, the weekend escape of the rich
people from the city. On our arrival large tower blocks were greeting us so we
decided nevertheless to get on our bicycles and ride to Long Hai, a small
relaxed town on the coast. Although the beach with some jellyfish and rather
grey water wasn’t quite paradise on earth, it made a good stop to relax, eat
some seafood and get to know some locals.
rouler…
The potentially beautiful ride along the
coast to Mui Ne, a well known touristy kite surfing spot, was somewhat
disturbed by the masses of tourist resorts being developed all over the place.
But we still found some nice spots for iced coffee on the beach, some scenic views and some deserted beaches for a dip in the water along the way.
Voila
enfin la plage qu’il nous fallait !
Although Mui Ne is highly recommended in the guide books, the little town itself is no more than a long strip
of hotels and restaurants along the beach. The signs in Russian and the scary big blokes do not help to make its image more appealing... However, it turned out to be low season, there was
nobody at the beach and we found a nice little guesthouse right at the end of
the strip with palm trees and hammocks on the terrace and a direct access to
the beach. Just what we needed to chill out for a few days!
After two days of not doing much more than
reading and swimming we decided to discover a little bit the surrounding area and its sights.
It turned out we were only a few minutes walk away from the so called “Fairy
Stream”, a beautiful stream winding through breathtaking red and white sand
cliffs, making a pleasant barefoot walk.
plage.
The fishing village of Mui Ne, again just a
few minutes bike ride away, was a great place to watch locals at the beach and
a beautiful spot to watch the sunset over the boats.
sable…
On our final day we hired a motorbike to
drive to some white sand dunes located north of the city. Unfortunately we were
not the only ones who had the great idea of watching the sunrise over the
dunes, it turned out it was also on the programme of the planned tours.
Thankfully, the noisy squats did not have much time to play in the sand before their tour moved on
and so we quickly had the miniature Sahara dunes to ourselves. On the way back
we stopped at some nice beaches for a swim and fruit shake, not bad at
all!
